Trish Stratus Says the Asuka Dream Match Was Pure Fiction

WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus has officially ended years of speculation surrounding a rumored clash with Asuka. In a recent interview, the legendary Canadian wrestler addressed persistent fan theories suggesting that she was once penciled in to face “The Empress of Tomorrow” at NXT TakeOver: Toronto in 2016. According to Stratus, the match was never even considered by WWE.
For nearly a decade, whispers of a fantasy match between Stratus and Asuka have circulated within wrestling circles, fueled by social media debates and podcast discussions. The theory gained traction largely because the 2016 TakeOver event took place in Stratus’s hometown of Toronto. At the time, Asuka was dominating NXT’s women’s division with an unbeaten streak, and the idea of her facing a returning legend at a major show seemed plausible.
Speaking with Inside The Ropes, Stratus finally laid the rumor to rest. “Nope, no, no, that never was a thing,” she said emphatically. “People just assumed it because of the location. Toronto equals Trish, apparently. But it was never discussed.”
Stratus also addressed another often-repeated element of the rumor, which claimed she was unable to wrestle because she was pregnant at the time. “I don’t even think I was pregnant in 2016,” she laughed. “That’s a total fabrication. Just another layer of the myth. Consider it officially debunked.”
The rumor had seemed believable to many fans not only because of the location, but also due to Asuka’s dominance. By 2016, she had dismantled every opponent in NXT and held the Women’s Championship in a vice grip. A marquee name like Stratus would have added even more significance to the event and generated considerable buzz.
However, WWE took a different route. Instead of calling back Stratus, the company surprised fans by bringing back another former Women’s Champion. Mickie James, who had not appeared in WWE since 2010 and had built a strong legacy in TNA, returned to face Asuka at the event. The match was well-received and showcased James’s enduring talent. Her performance led to WWE re-signing her on a full-time basis shortly afterward.
Although fans continued to romanticize the idea of a Stratus versus Asuka showdown, the Hall of Famer’s recent comments finally bring closure to a rumor that had lingered for far too long. Over the years, Stratus has made several notable returns to the ring, including a highly praised match against Charlotte Flair at SummerSlam 2019 and a more extended return in 2023. Still, Asuka has never been part of any official plans involving the legendary Canadian star.
Now that the speculation has been addressed, the story serves as a reminder of how quickly wrestling fans can turn fantasy scenarios into widely accepted narratives. When iconic figures are involved, fiction often gains a life of its own.
Stratus’s candid remarks not only clear the air but also reflect her humor and perspective. “I guess people just really wanted to see it,” she said. “But sometimes, fantasy booking is just that. Fantasy.”
