Shayna Baszler’s WWE Future: Behind the Scenes at NXT and What It Really Means

Shayna Baszler’s recent appearance behind the scenes at WWE’s NXT has reignited speculation surrounding her current status with the company. Once a dominant force in both NXT and the main roster, Baszler was released earlier this year after nearly a decade-long run. But now, fans and insiders are asking: is the Queen of Spades quietly working her way back into WWE?

Reports emerged this week that Baszler was involved in producing a match on NXT between Kelani Jordan and Lainey Reid. This match, featured on The CW, was notable not just for its in-ring action, but also for the curiosity surrounding Baszler’s involvement backstage. According to Bodyslam.net’s Cory Hays, she served as a producer for the bout. However, her official employment status remained unclear, prompting further digging from wrestling journalists and insiders.

Veteran reporter Dave Meltzer provided a more grounded update during a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio. According to Meltzer, Baszler has not been re-signed as a full-time producer or agent with WWE. Instead, her recent involvement with NXT might simply be a temporary arrangement while she remains under her 90-day non-compete clause following her release.

Meltzer explained that Baszler is still technically within that contractual window and therefore cannot wrestle elsewhere until early August. He noted that while her participation in producing matches has only just been made public, this is not the first time she has helped behind the scenes. She has attended other NXT tapings and contributed as an agent, but these activities had not been reported until now.

“It’s not like she has taken a job as a full-time agent,” Meltzer stated. “She’s just around and assisting where needed. WWE asked her to help, and she did.”

This development raises questions about whether WWE is testing the waters for a potential new role for Baszler, or simply taking advantage of her availability and experience before her contract fully expires. Either way, it’s evident that the former MMA fighter remains respected within WWE circles, both for her in-ring accomplishments and her wrestling acumen.

Baszler is no stranger to NXT. She was a two-time NXT Women’s Champion and held the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships on three occasions, partnering with stars like Nia Jax and Ronda Rousey. Her reputation as a legitimate tough competitor made her one of the most credible threats in WWE’s women’s division during her peak years.

This weekend is a significant one for WWE’s female roster, with two major events on the calendar. NXT hosts the Great American Bash on Saturday, followed by the anticipated Evolution 2 event on Sunday. The timing of Baszler’s backstage work at NXT has added more fuel to the idea that she could be part of future plans, especially as WWE continues to push its women’s division to new heights.

Whether Shayna Baszler ultimately returns as a producer, an in-ring performer, or not at all remains to be seen. What is clear is that she remains a presence within WWE, even after her official release, and that presence is enough to keep fans talking. As August approaches, all eyes will be on what her next move might be — and whether WWE has a surprise waiting in the wings.
