John Cena and CM Punk Segment
The night kicked off with a fired-up John Cena, letting the crowd go wild before he finally got on the mic. He threw it in the fans’ faces, calling them “keyboard warriors” for cheering R-Truth at Money in the Bank, calling Truth a “sideshow comedian” and a “lie.”
CM Punk shows up. Punk laid it bare for Cena, saying it’s ironic for him, the “boy scout,” to want to tear down the system that made him, while Punk, the “outcast,” was there for the fans.
The conversation really heated up when Punk brought up the Eliminator Chamber, that electrifying match where, even with Seth Rollins’ interference, Cena still put him in the STF, and the last thing he heard was John apologizing, because “he knew what he was doing wasn’t right.” Punk provoked, saying the title corrupted Cena, just as it corrupted him in 2012. But now, he has to become a monster to stop the monster Cena has become.
Cena picked up the mic again, smiled, and confirmed: Cena vs. Punk, one final match, the “Best in the World” against the “Greatest of All Time” for the Undisputed WWE Championship… BUT NOT TONIGHT! Cena said a match like this had to be big, and Punk would have to follow him to Saudi Arabia, at Night of Champions.
As the two faced off, the final surprise: Seth Rollins made his entrance onto the stage, flanked by Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed, holding the Money in the Bank briefcase.
AJ Styles Def. Chad Gable
Man, if there’s one name that deserves recognition and, more importantly, a title right now, it’s Chad Gable. What this guy has been doing is just incredible. He’s simply pulled off three high-quality matches in less than 72 hours.
With that said, AJ Styles still won the fight!
Roxanne Perez Def. Liv Morgan, Kairi Sane And Rhea Ripley
The brawl started hot right out of the gate. Ripley tried a bear hug on Liv, but Roxanne saved her with a diving elbow! Kairi jumped into the fray, hitting a “two-for-one” on Liv and Roxanne! She even did a little jig before getting a kick to the gut from Rhea.
Things only got hotter. Roxanne stopped a Riptide on Liv, and Liv followed up with an insane Codebreaker. Kairi launched herself at both of them, but Liv and Roxanne worked together, military pressing Kairi over the ropes onto Rhea, sending both of them out of the ring and into the commercial break!
When we came back from the ads, Kairi was trying to mount a comeback on Liv, but Roxanne intervened. Rhea stacked them up with a dropkick, Liv cut off Rhea with a springboard Codebreaker, and Kairi broke it all up! The fight went to the corner, Liv brought Roxanne in, jockeying for position in the turnbuckles, and Rhea got under them… DOUBLE POWERBOMB on Liv Morgan and Roxanne Perez! What a moment!
Kairi followed up with a Diving Forearm on Rhea, almost getting the win! She even hit a La Casadora Stunner, but Roxanne and Liv dove in to break up the pin! They threw Rhea into the post, hit Kairi with some vicious stomps, and Roxanne even landed a lungblower on Kairi.
Rhea and Raquel traded punches, Kairi dove off the post with a diving elbow, taking both of them out! Kairi climbed to the top corner again, Liv was still down and out, and she launched herself with a Diving Elbow… BUT ROXANNE PEREZ BROKE UP THE PIN AND THEN HIT HER OWN BRIDGING JACKKNIFE PIN ON KAIRI SANE!
Bayley’s Back! And She’s Got Becky Lynch in Her Sights!
Becky Lynch, who strutted out with her shiny new Intercontinental Title, giving another shout-out to her “hot husband.” Interestingly, Becky was selling a shoulder injury, humorously claiming Lyra Valkyria had raised her arm “too hard” the other night. “She tried to kill me!” Becky joked, inviting Lyra out to the ring to “raise it right” this time.
Just as Lyra was about to step into the squared circle, a familiar face, none other than Bayley, jumped Becky Lynch from behind!
What do you think Bayley’s return means for Becky’s reign? And where does Lyra fit into all this?
R-Truth (Ron Killings) Promo
R-Truth basically turn heel.
grabbed the mic at the announce table and unleashed a promo that gave everyone chills. “Don’t let nobody tell you that you don’t matter. Don’t let nobody tell you that your voice doesn’t matter. They heard, they listened, they felt and they understood! I am back, because of y’all!” he declared, his voice thick with emotion.
Truth said he was back for the fans, of course, but also for himself. He admitted that everyone loves R-Truth, but sometimes he can be “too funny, too nice, and too forgiving.” And to show that he’s serious now, that he’s feeling “alive” and is no longer a “sideshow act” (that one was for you, John Cena!), he did the unthinkable: he cut his hair right then and there, in front of everyone!
At the end, “The Truth has set me free, and I am Ron Killings.”
Sami Zayn Def. Dominik Mysterio, Bron Breakker And Penta
The match started with Dominik immediately bailing to the floor and Penta diving on him with a tope con giro. Sami bum-rushed Breakker, but the guy’s a wall and threw Sami across the ring with a belly-to-belly suplex. Zero M came back in, Bron caught him with a World’s Strongest Slam and turned Dominik inside out with a lariat before we went to the first commercial.
When we came back, the brawl continued! Penta snapped off a tijeras on Mysterio, an enzuigiri in the corner, and a handstand dropkick that almost got the win. Sami and Breakker went at it, with Sami hammering punches, but Bron got fired up and took him down for what Michael Cole memorably called “pound and ground.”
There was choking Zayn in the ropes, Bron talking trash at the crowd for being behind him, and then Sami flew with an Arabian Press Asai Moonsault on Breakker to the floor! Zero M off the top, a plancha took Sami out! Dom off the ropes, a suicide dive tornado DDT on Penta! And Breakker, oh, Breakker flew off the apron with a diving lariat that put Mysterio over the announce desk, and off we went to another break!
Back from commercial, Breakker hit an Avalanche Frankensteiner on Zayn, and all four men were down and out! Penta caught him with a superkick, tried a military press, but Zero M countered with a DDT! Mysterio tried to steal the cover but couldn’t seal the deal! Dominik and Sami were jockeying for position, and Dom’s “Three Amigos” sequence was countered into a Blue Thunder Driver by Sami… but it wasn’t enough!
Zero M hit Sacrifice on Zayn, a Penta Driver, Dominik broke up the pin, and even tried a crucifix pin for a one-count! There was a superkick from Penta, a facebuster, a flip piledriver connected, and it looked like it was over… BUT NO! Breakker got back into it, hit a spear on Penta on the floor, and then, to everyone’s surprise, LA Knight appeared out of nowhere and hit a BFT on Bron Breakker, disappearing into the crowd!
After an exploder suplex in the corner, Sami charged… And that was it! Sami Zayn won by pinfall with the Helluva Kick on Dominik Mysterio!
Nikki Bella Is Back!
The crowd in her hometown gave Nikki Bella a seriously warm welcome last night, even if she seemed a little shaky in her first promo in ages. You could tell she was a bit nervous, but the love from the fans was undeniable!
Liv Morgan crashed the party! And because this is WWE’s women’s division we’re talking about, Liv went straight for the jugular, taunting Nikki about her recent divorce. Ouch! But you know Nikki Bella – she didn’t just stand there. She fired back, telling Liv that she was about to lose her own man to Roxanne Perez! Talk about hitting below the belt!
Liv wasn’t having any of it, though, and she laid Nikki out cold with an Oblivion, leaving a clear message. It was a pretty direct tease for one of the key matches we’ll be seeing at Evolution.
Gunther Def. Jey Uso
Raw delivered one of the most shocking moments of the year! Jey Uso’s reign as World Heavyweight Champion came to a end!
The match kicked off intensely, with Jey almost immediately locking in a sleeper hold, but the Austrian powerhouse slammed him into the corner for the break. Jey followed up with a right hand and another sleeper, but GUNTHER tossed him aside and had to bail to the floor to dodge a superkick from Jey, sending us to the first commercial break.
Back from commercial, Uso landed a diving crossbody for a nearfall, but came up clutching his stomach and dry heaving! GUNTHER immediately took notice, a smile spreading across his face as he hammered the champion’s midsection with boots and kicks. Tearing off Jey’s shirt, revealing the tape holding his gut together, The Ring General drove his knees into the injured midsection again and again!
A backbreaker connected, GUNTHER ripped off the tape, and after a hard whip to the corner, Uso sidestepped and grabbed the sleeper hold again! The Ring General reached the ropes, but Jey still managed to land a German suplex on him! The action spilled to the floor, where GUNTHER retaliated with a German suplex of his own, and off we went to another break!
Returning from commercial, they jockeyed for position over a suplex, and Uso managed a sheerdrop brainbuster, but he was slow to capitalize due to his injured ribs! Jey landed some right hands, the crowd behind him, and an enzuigiri connected! Hurting but hanging in there, he charged in, but GUNTHER ducked the “Ode to Rikishi” and clamped on the dreaded Gojira Clutch!
Uso slung him off, charged in again, landed a back body drop to the apron, but the Gojira Clutch was applied in the ropes! Jey pulled him over the ropes and dumped him to the floor! He then flew with a suicide dive! Back inside, GUNTHER went for a diving splash, but Jey’s knees were up! Jey hit a spear, went to the top… BUT THE RING GENERAL KICKED OUT OF THE SPLASH!
Down and out, Uso lay in wait… AND GUNTHER DROPPED HIM WITH A LARIAT! A powerbomb was countered into a victory roll pin… SO CLOSE! A superkick staggered the challenger, back to the sleeper hold, but The Ring General countered with a backbreaker! A Tenryu Powerbomb connected for a two-count! AND GUNTHER HIT A SPEAR FOR ANOTHER NEARFALL!
Jey was defiant, grabbing another sleeper, but GUNTHER reversed it into the Gojira Clutch! Into the turnbuckle to break, Uso off the ropes, another spear, up top, but The Ring General simply rolled away from the splash! The Gojira Clutch was applied in the middle of the ring, the hooks locked in deep, shifting gears as Jey desperately crawled for the ropes!
GUNTHER grabbed the arm, rolled into the middle of the ring, Uso staggered to his feet and reached for the ropes but couldn’t quite get there! Trapping the other arm, GUNTHER fell back, Uso reaching, fading, flagging, he rolled over to his knees again, but The Ring General fell right back to the mat!
Overhead elbows gave Uso a chance to reverse the hold! GUNTHER faded, grasping, rolling over to his knees, and he finally broke the hold! Overhead elbows, right back to the Gojira Clutch, the hooks in deep, Jey’s eyes glassy as he reached and tried to break The Ring General’s grip…
GUNTHER won by referee stoppage with the Gojira Clutch, becoming your new WWE World Heavyweight Champion!
