Christopher Daniels Addresses the “Higher Power” Rumor and Why It Was Never Going to Work

For years, wrestling fans have speculated that Christopher Daniels was originally intended to be the mysterious “Higher Power” behind The Undertaker’s Ministry of Darkness during WWE’s Attitude Era. Now, the veteran has spoken out and cleared the air once and for all.

In a recent appearance on the Insight podcast with Chris Van Vliet, Daniels explained that he had no idea about the rumor until long after it had taken hold online. According to him, no one ever approached him about the storyline at the time, and he doesn’t believe it was ever seriously considered.

“I didn’t hear about this until years later,” Daniels said. “Maybe it was discussed, but nobody told me anything. And honestly, it would’ve been a terrible idea. Imagine Undertaker revealing this ‘higher power’ and it’s me. Fans would’ve gone, ‘Who is this guy?’”

Daniels drew a parallel to a similar failed attempt in WCW. He recalled being introduced with a dark, hooded character meant to be the mastermind behind Vampiro. He filmed a promo talking about “harvesting souls” only to have it air on Nitro and be met with confusion. Backstage, Jeff Jarrett famously reacted by asking, “Who the f*** was that?” to which Daniels replied, “That’s me, sir.” The idea was scrapped immediately, and Daniels was released a few months later.

Reflecting on his early career, Daniels admitted that he likely didn’t fit WWE’s mold at the time. “I was doing WWE dark matches and Jim Cornette was always pushing for me,” he said. “But back then, I was 5’10 and everyone else was well over six feet. Once Vince saw me, I think he thought, ‘We can do better.’ And honestly, I get it.”

Although the rumor about Daniels being the “Higher Power” has persisted for decades, he now sees it as a fun piece of what-if trivia. For him, it was never real — and probably never would’ve worked anyway.
